I too tend to go in search of sad books, or sad movies, when I'm down. In the way-back, I was a person who could not cry easily. Movies and books helped me release the tears I needed to cry for all sorts of reasons.
I haven't read the Carey book and look forward to hearing more about it.
Wracking my brain for a book to recommend. And the thing that keeps coming into my mind is a story that I originally saw as a movie but I also have as a book. I believe it came out as a movie and a novel in the same year - 1971.
It is "Harold and Maude" Still makes me weep. Great soundtrack on the movie too - Cat Stevens.
